Southern California Wildfires: Web and Blog resources

Southern California – October 23, 2007 – Southern California is home base for Kithbridge, and today is a trying day for many in Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego as wildfires threaten areas up and down the coast.

For those in the affected areas, you should contact local authorities and rely on official sources for guidance as to whether you are in danger or should evacuate. For those elsewhere, however, here are some of the best resources online to help you understand what's going on here in SoCal.

State Resources

California has set up www.calfires.com which has a number of resources and maps. In addition, the Office of Emergency Services provides additional information, including status reports / hard data on progress fighting the fires.


San Diego

For the San Diego fire, blogger Bruce Hendersen is doing excellent work covering the fires in his area, and has a detailed Google Map showing affected areas. In addition, check the San Diego Union Tribune's site, in particular their fire blog. Finally, Jimmy Akin has another good map showing the fire perimeters.


Orange County

In Orange County, the OC Register seems to be on top of things, listing the latest breaking news right on their front page.


Los Angeles County

For the Malibu fires, the best Google map seems to be from the Los Angeles Daily News, here.

The city of Santa Clarita has its own Google Map page.

The Los Angeles Times is also updating its own Google Map of the fires and is covering the entire set of blazes from Malibu all the way down to San Diego.


San Bernadino County

The Lake Arrowhead fire is being covered in detail at rimoftheworld.net, which has switched to a low-bandwidth version due to overload

Rimoftheworld.net also has an incident page with raw data being reported on the Lake Arrowhead and other fires.


General & Other

California Fire News is a blog being continually updated with hard data on the fires currently burning.

Infinite Monkeys is also doing aggregation coverage with lots and lots of links.

Nate Ritter emails to say the he's "twittering as much of the media releases as possible and helping people find out if their homes are burned here."

If you want a big-picture view of the fires, check out the National Interagency Fire Center's website. There you will find extremely detailed information on what resources the Federal fire teams are devoting to the various fires, including a regularly updated status report (PDF).
